The City of Rockford has worked closely with the Rockford Park District and the Riverfront Museum Campus (RMP) to design aRiverwalk improvement within the RMP footprint. The facility will include an iconic cable-stay bridge, multi-use path connections to existing downtown trails, and a small amphitheatre to compliment the educational uses found at the Burpee and Discovery Center museums. The Riverwalk improvement is scheduled for construction in early 2011 and will add to the recentBurpee and Discovery Center expansion projects which added approximately 10,000 square feet of exhibition space to the complex, and created new exhibits halls for both museums. Designed specifically to allow the region to come into closer contact with the Rock River, the Riverwalk will add significant trail assets as well as connect and add to gathering spaces within the RMP complex.
